Carl Matthews track listing

A bit more than a top 10 but I hope it gives a feel for the soul nights. The tracks are ones that I personally remember people enjoying dancing to or asking for them to be played. They are not ultra rare soul, it's not everybody's cup of tea going out to listen to new tunes all night. I get the feeling at the soul nights that people go with friends to have a good time and party, heck, there's even a bar. Hopefully the gang and myself up there spinning the tunes are hitting the right note. Ultimately it's the soul fans who support the soul nights that dictate the direction. So keep on asking for tunes show your appreciation to a good sound and keep on dancing.

Carl Matthews, Soul fan.

Do I love you (Indeed I do) - Chris Clark / Frank Wilson
Moonlight music and you - Laura Greene
High in protein with a secret recipe coating. Don't throw your bones on the dance floor. Both versions of 'Do I love you' get spins at the soul nights, which one will you go for? Both available family size. Laura Greene's zinger of a track. By the way, did you bring your guitar - or even a couple of serviettes?!

The Snake - Al Wilson
Love it, hate it. Those who hate it, have loved it and will love it again. An ever green track. Ssssuper!

I've lost you - Jackie Wilson
When the ass fell out of the darts game Jockey turned his talents to singing. Sorry! Wrong Wilson. This is a great deal from the main man.

Nowhere to run - Martha Reeves & the Vandellas
Much requested track. Absolute classic Motown.

Moody woman - Jerry Butler
Women? Moody? Don't believe it. Where did Jerry Butler find the inspiration for this one then?

Comin home baby - Mel Torme
Get this one on nice and early to remind everyone there's a few hours of music and dancing to go.

Love don't go through no changes on me - Sister Sledge
The sisters have picked up many awards, trophies and rosettes over the years for the longest song title. A fantastic track, keep telling yourself it's Sister Sledge.

Get out (and let me cry) - Harold Melvin and the blue notes
Come back in (and have a dance). Played it the May soul night and went down well.

I got a feeling - Barbara Randolph
My man is a sweet man - Millie Jackson
These two tracks get the long service award, played at the first soul night at the Hydro and have had an outing at every one since. Great stuff.

Police story - Pat Williams orchestra
Included to say hello to the Southern soul funksters who gave this track a break when it was first played at the Hydro. That reaction has not been matched, must have been something in the beer that night.

You can count on me - Sammy Davis Jr.
Hawaii five 'O' with words. What else is there to say. Surfs up.

Turning my heartbeat up - MVP's
Adrenalin, tension, apprehension. This is formula one, pole position, green light, go! Riders ready! Pedals ready!

I'm so happy - Prince Phillip Mitchell
Getting popular at the soul nights. Absolute class.

Baby hit and run - Contours
Just a little misunderstanding - Contours
Double whammy from the Contours. Just try not shaking a leg to this pair. Anyone not moving to these, get out the body bag and phone the morgue.

Whole lot of shaking going on in my heart (since I met you girl) - Smokey Robinson and the Miracles
In the days before 'Smash Hits' bands would often put all the lyrics in the title of their songs. Their fans could then sing-along while dancing.

Back street - Edwin Starr
A sad loss this year for soul fans. He was out there doing it for real, giving 110% and going that extra mile at every live show. A true soul legend.

Ain't no mountain high enough - Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell
The last record of the night at the first soul do in the Hydro. Don't ask me what the first was. This pisses all over Diana Ross's version, standing or squatting.

Sock it to em J.B. - Rex Garvin and the Mighty Cravers
A pounding track, not about James Brown but James Bond. From the film 'Finger in a gold pussy'. Part one, played at soul nights. Part two, favoured by Chicken eating crazy golfers.

I ain't going nowhere - Jr Walker & the all-stars
Wear in on our face - Dells
Friday night - Johnnie Taylor
Just don't know - Chubby Checker
Somebody's been sleeping - 100 Proof aged in soul
That beatin rhythm - Jimmy Conwell

This soulful six pack just reminds me so much of Lenny Henderson. A soul fan who walked the walk, talked the talk and boy! could he dance.
